To say that my family consumes a lot of coconut oil would be a gross understatement. Above is a picture of my sons Neil and Evan with a few of our orders from Tropical Traditions during the past few years. And yes, the big container is 5 gallons – and at 117 calories per tablespoon, there are a whopping 150,000 calories in that bucket.
I won’t delve into the health benefits of coconut oil as a) I am not an expert and b) my friend and Registered Dietician Amy Kubal has already covered that a previous guest post called Cracking the Coconut. Let’s just say I would much rather consume coconut oil vs. all of the “heart healthy” alternatives like corn, soy, and canola.
At our house, coconut oil is our go-to cooking oil in most situations, but the way I enjoy best is as part of my daily snack. Every day I have a “treat” of 2 square of 100% cacao (unsweetened chocolate) with a tablespoon of coconut oil. And based on my research (using my own taste buds), the coconut oil from Tropical Traditions is hands down the best.
In addition to tasting good, the process that Tropical Traditions uses to source, harvest, and produce the oil helps to create a sustainable farming economy:
“Our Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is still produced by hand, using the wet-milling process of extracting the oil from fresh coconuts. Our producers have learned a lot of things over the years, since most of them have been producing this oil for over 10 years now. They have learned how to pick out the best coconuts from each harvest that produce the best quality oil.”
