Over the holidays, I reread Speed Trap, the story of Ben Johnson as told by his legendary coach, Charlie Francis. For those of you that don’t follow track and field, or are too young to remember, Ben Johnson was the world record holder in the 100m dash in the late 1980’s. And he won the 1988 Gold Medal in the 100m, but was stripped of the medal three days later after testing positive for a banned anabolic steroid.
Was this fair? Certainly Ben Johnson broke the “rules,” but I guess my question is “Are the rules fair?”
Why are baseball players who use PEDs labeled as cheaters and effectively banned from Hall of Fame and players in other sports given a slap on the wrist? I personally think that the rules are filled with hypocrisy, but I have a feeling I am in the minority.
